Hogarth: Life in Progress with Jacqueline Riding

A celebrated painter, graphic satirist, art theorist and social commentator, William Hogarth’s vision still defines the 18th century. To accompany ‘Hogarth’s Britons’, the latest exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery, we are delighted to welcome exhibition co-curator, historian and author Dr Jacqueline Riding.

Following in Hogarth’s own footsteps, from humble beginnings to professional triumph (and occasional disaster), Dr Riding’s new book, ‘Hogarth: Life in Progress’ illuminates the work and life of a great artist who embraced the highest principles even while charting humanity’s lowest vices. Dr Riding brings William Hogarth vividly to life in this first biography of the artist for over 20 years, immersing us in the world Hogarth inhabited and from which he drew inspiration. The book accompanies ‘Hogarth’s Britons: Succession, Patriotism and the Jacobite Rebellion‘ exhibition currently showing at Derby Museum and Art Gallery.

Dr Jacqueline Riding is former curator of the Palace of Westminster and director of London’s Handel House Museum, a fellow of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, Royal Historical Society, University of York, and Trustee of the Jacobite Studies Trust and JMW Turner’s House (Twickenham). She is author of ‘Jacobites: A New History of the ’45 Rebellion’ (2016), ‘Peterloo: The Story of the Manchester Massacre’ (2018) and ‘Hogarth: Life in Progress’ (2021).
