In 2022, in co-production with volunteers, museum staff and community groups, Derby Museums developed and created the first History Makers exhibition – History Makers: A Celebration of Derbyshire Women and Gender Diversity – which explored what it means to be a History Maker in Derbyshire. The exhibition and associated
project lab investigated and challenged the historical record, which informs our heritage work here at Derby Museums, but which has often overlooked or
misrepresented individuals and groups whose lives make up our shared history.
Now, a second exhibition – History Makers: Unfolded – opens at Derby Museum and Art Gallery, building on conversations started last year when we invited audiences into our gallery spaces to reflect upon the histories being told, to share stories as History Makers in their own right, and to contribute thoughts and memories around important historical moments. This new exhibition includes a continuation of the project lab, inviting even more people to share their thoughts around representation in museum spaces and asking what is needed to support current and future History Makers across Derbyshire.
The public response to our first History Makers exhibition was phenomenal, helping to shape our thinking as a civic museum around the empowerment of current and future History Makers within our gallery spaces. Imagine the legacy we can create a second time around! We invite you to join us again, to contribute as a History Maker and to find out what we have learned, how we have responded and who we have been working with.
Let’s keep the conversation going.
Exhibition suitable for all.
