Mary Pickford was so much more than the wife of Derby-based architect Joseph Pickford. In an illustrated talk, Dr Peter Collinge uses his research to discuss the significant contribution Mary Pickford made to the development of late-Georgian Derby. It focuses on her business interests, political engagement and charitable giving. Doing so reveals the extent to which women were active participants in the urban environments in which they lived.
Dr Peter Collinge is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. His research focuses on female enterprise in Georgian Derbyshire, the poor laws, and health, leisure and tourism. Recent publications include articles on Kedleston spa and inn, and country house visitors in the eighteenth century.
