Camilla Greenwell is a photographer with a Fine Art and performance background, who is based in London and works internationally.
Over the past decade, she has worked with numerous artists, dancers and performers to create imagery that stems from an interest in people and the stories they tell, often occupying a space between reality and performance.
This exhibition at Déda brings together different strands of Greenwell’s extensive practice, from black and white photographs of dancers in rehearsal to images captured away from the theatre, outside or in people’s homes. Although the settings vary, all the images explore those brief moments our eyes often miss and hone in on the experience of the dancer and their innate and unique physicality. The work shown often plays with the concept of what it means to capture movement in a still image, and what that stillness brings to a dancer’s practice. Ultimately, all the images are a celebration of the collaboration between performer and photographer, as well as exploring how we respond to different spaces both physically and psychologically.
The exhibition also includes Greenwell’s lauded short film, In Search of Sanctuary, made in collaboration with James Cousins Company during lockdown.
Greenwell has photographed dance and theatre extensively and has worked with the Barbican, Ballet Black, Candoco Dance Company, Dance Umbrella, EDGE, Far From The Norm, Gandini Juggling, James Cousins Company, the National Theatre, Nora, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Rambert, Sadler’s Wells, Studio Wayne McGregor, Theo Clinkard, The Albany, The Place, Yorkshire Dance and Young Vic.
Greenwell’s first solo exhibition, Movement in Still Form, is available on the Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage.
