The Great Mass was written for Mozart’s new wife Constanze, who sang at the first performance, and is one of his finest liturgical works. In this concert, we pair it with Puccini’s mass – almost exactly 100 years after this composer’s death. He wrote it when only eighteen, but this piece anticipates the operatic colour of those later works he is best known for.
