Britten: St Nicolas (Andrew Henley: tenor, Cantamus Training Choir, Choristers from the Cathedral Choir)
Gjeilo: Song of the Universal
Finzi: Eclogue for Piano and String Orchestra (Eleanor Kornas: piano)
Two highly-talented young musicians, pianist Eleanor Kornas and tenor Andrew Henley, will be performing with the Derbyshire Singers and the Derbyshire Sinfonia at Derby Cathedral on Saturday 16th November. They will be joined in Britten’s vivid depiction of the life of St Nicolas, that most popular of saints, by the youthful voices of the Cantamus Training Choir and choristers from the Cathedral, as they hymn his life and achievements and paint dramatic musical ‘pictures’ – amongst them Nicolas rescuing sailors from a wild storm, or bringing back to life three boys ‘pickled’ by a wicked butcher! Norwegian-born Ola Gjeilo’s atmospheric setting of words by Walt Whitman provides a fitting contrast, and Eleanor Kornas returns as soloist in Gerald Finzi’s eloquent and moving Eclogue.
Tickets for the concert, which starts at 7.00pm, are available from Foulds Music (Irongate Derby), Robert Young Florists (Crown Square Matlock), Natural Choice in Ashbourne (01335-346096), or at www.derbyshiresingers.org (students and accompanied U-16s free).
