Profile

Anything goes! This is the motto of Paracinema, a festival dedicated to films and genres outside the mainstream. Expect a steady diet of horror, sci-fi and fantasy but in addition we will explore other genres and sub-genres that don’t often get the opportunity to play on the big screen. We also welcome submissions under the banner New Media (VR, Music Video, Online TV etc) as long as the subject fits the themes of the festival.

On March 10, 1917, Derby woman Alice Wheeldon was convicted—alongside her daughter, Winnie Mason, and son-in-law, Alf Mason—of conspiring to assassinate Prime Minister David Lloyd George and Labour leader Arthur Henderson. A dedicated suffragist, pacifist, and anti-war activist, Alice’s trial was sensational and politically charged, involving undercover agents, accusations of bad character, and an alleged poison plot.
Over time, evidence has revealed a serious miscarriage of justice. Today, a growing campaign to clear their names continues to inspire local communities, historians, and supporters around the world. ✊

Dracula Returns to Derby!

🦇 Dracula Returns to Derby! 🦇
Join artist Nicki Dennett at the Museum of Making on 2 & 9 March 2025 to reimagine Dracula’s cloak, first worn on stage in Derby’s Grand Theatre in May 1924.
Participants will create carborundum prints exploring the dramatic contrast of light and dark, forming the cloak’s striking exterior. The lining will be a collaborative block-printed fabric piece, with the chance to print onto paper as well.
