Make beautiful textiles out of rubbish with Sarah Cooke

In this one day course, you will learn how to warp up a simple frame loom, plain weave, and then how to incorporate all sorts of colourful materials which often get thrown away (plastic packaging, old cables, old clothes and jewellery). You can make a wall hanging, a table mat, a small bag, or cover a note book.

Materials:

Sarah will provide everything you need, but you are welcome to bring some of your own materials too. At the end of the session, you can choose to buy the loom, pick-up stick and shuttle for £18. And you will go home looking at your rubbish in a new way!

This is a day course running on Sunday 26 November 2023 (10am-4pm) at the Museum of Making.

The course is limited to a maximum of ten people to ensure participants are fully supported.

About Sarah Cooke:

With a Fine Art degree, and many years teaching and organising the Arts courses for Bristol Adult Learning Service, Sarah now has the time to focus on her own creativity. she has been weaving for over 15 years, and feels that she still has so much to learn. Starting with tapestry weaving on a simple frame loom, then exploring the many ways of weaving on a rigid heddle loom, Sarah then bought an 8-shaft table loom, which opened up endless possibilities.

Sarah is now weaving with unconventional materials – colourful plastic packaging, old clothes and old cables, and ‘Weaving with Waste’ took off. Not only does this mean that she buys much less new yarn (better for the planet!), but the range of colours and textures are so exciting and unexpected. Sarah loves to encourage others to learn how to weave, and to get as much enjoyment from this craft as she does.
