Profile

Steve Smith learnt woodturning as an engineering patternmaker working in the foundry industry, but has used his lathe skills more generally in making bespoke furniture and for the creation of utilitarian domestic objects such as food bowls, rolling pins, platters or small circular boxes.

On this one-day introductory course, Steve, Museum of Making Workshop Manager will teach participants the rudiments of tool use and selection – scrapers, gouges and parting tools – and explain the differences between ‘face plate’- chuck work and spindle turning ‘working between centres’.

The day course is designed as a hands-on project-based course on which students get to make and take home 2-3 small pieces of turning.
