Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme Launches in City Centre

03/05/2024

The Cathedral Quarter BID are working alongside Derby City Council Public Health to promote the new Breastfeeding Welcome Award Scheme. Businesses who actively make their premises welcoming for mothers and families to breastfeed can positively contribute to a woman feeling more confident to breastfeed in public. It is incredibly important to attract families to the Cathedral Quarter and make them feel welcome during their time here. Breastfeeding mums are more likely to return to venues they feel comfortable in, stay longer and spend more.

The scheme is free to join and simply involves the completion of a very short online form. Criteria to achieve the award is as follows:

  • Provide a comfortable space for women to breastfeed; it can be within your main area, a separate room but this should never be a toilet;
  • Treat breastfeeding mums the same way you would any other customer;
  • Commit to providing informal training for your staff to be supportive of breastfeeding;
  • Display your certificate and window sticker to proudly show that you welcome breastfeeding. These will be posted out to you on completion of the online application.

If you are interested in applying for the Breastfeeding Welcome Award please complete the online form at: https://www.derby.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/breastfeeding-support/#page-5before.
