Remembrance Commemorations Announced

04/11/2024

The city’s Annual Remembrance Sunday Service and Parade will return on Sunday, November 10. Troops from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers’ 148 Divisional Support Company, alongside members of local veterans and youth organisations, will march through the city centre and proceed to the Market Place.

A brief service, led by The Very Reverend Dr. Peter Robinson, Dean of Derby, will commence at 11:00 a.m., during which a two-minute silence will be observed. Wreaths will then be placed at the War Memorial.

For the first time this year, the Surtal Arts Community Choir, a Derby-based South Asian arts organisation, will perform in the Market Place at approximately 10:15 a.m., prior to the arrival of the parade.

The public is invited to attend and observe the proceedings. Designated viewing areas will be set up in the Market Place, and the event will be displayed on a large screen.

Those unable to attend in person can watch the parade and service live on the Council’s YouTube channel.

Additionally, on Armistice Day (Monday, November 11), a short service will be held at the War Memorial at 11:00 a.m. for citizens wishing to honour those who lost their lives in service.

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Strategy, and Policy, stated:

“Remembrance holds a significant place in our civic calendar, and I am proud that partners from across the city are once again coming together to host city centre events for both Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

“Remembrance honours not only British soldiers involved in the World Wars and subsequent conflicts but also those from across the Commonwealth. It is wonderful to showcase the contributions of South Asian nations with a performance by the Surtal Arts Community Choir prior to this year’s parade.

“I encourage as many people as possible to take part in and observe this year’s commemorations.”

For the safety of the public and parade participants, road closures will be in effect on Sunday, November 10, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. These include:

  • Sowter Road from its junction with St Michael’s Lane
  • The junction of Queen Street and Full Street
  • Derwent Street
  • Corporation Street and Tenant Street
  • St James Street, Corn Market, and Iron Gate (from its junction with Sadler Gate)

Parking restrictions will also be in place:

  • The Council House car park will be closed to the public from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, until 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10.
  • On-street parking on Full Street and Tenant Street will be suspended from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, to 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10.
  • The on-street parking bays on Derwent Street will be reserved for Blue Badge holders on Sunday, November 10.
